Gender Reveal: Mari & Osmel

Here’s one beautiful day I’m glad to share with you. I recently photographed a gender reveal family event…

But there’s a twist…the parents are expecting identical twins!

We used the Canon 6D as primary camera, with the Fuji X-E2S serving as backup. This was a small space, so I opted to use Canon’s 16-35mm f/4L IS lens – it has a good range, great image quality even wide open, and the very helpful image stabilization. For some of the close-up shots, I changed to Canon’s 100mm f/2.8 Macro – a relatively inexpensive lens with exceptional macro abilities and image quality.

Because I knew the space was small and it would be too crowded with family members to use a light stand and umbrella, I used my Yongnuo YN 568EX II flash on camera, used with a diffuser and/or bounced off the white ceilings, depending on the photo. I brought a tripod along for the posed family photos and the sequence photos, but many shots were taken handheld. Again, the 16-35mm’s image stabilization came in handy here.

In keeping with the mystery, everything was decorated in a combination of blue and pink…and there was blue and pink everywhere!

There was a lot of guessing as to the gender of the babies, and it had been going on for a while. So Mari and Osmel decided to really take the suspense as far as they could. For these photos, I set the camera on the tripod so I could keep the same framing from photo to photo, and shot in burst mode as they released the balloon, then picked my favorite photos. The Canon 6D’s limited speed (a measly 4.5 fps) meant I didn’t have as many frames to choose from, but I think it still did an excellent job.

They tricked the whole family with this. They intentionally released a balloon that was neither pink nor blue, to keep the suspense going. Sneaky sneaky!

Everyone had a good laugh, but the family was getting noticeably anxious to find out! Let’s cut the cake…

But wait! The grandmothers wanted to cut the cake and be the first to find out the gender.

Blue!!!

Mari and Osmel are expecting two identical baby boys, which will be joining us later this year. I am grateful to have been a part of this beautiful family moment, and I look forward to photographing their babies in the years to come.
